The most difficult thing about singing is negotiation from chest and head voice pitches.  If you take an ‘AGH’ and run up the scale at a certain point the voice will flip or yodel.  This is called ‘flipping style’.  Don’t believe for a moment that flipping or yodeling between chest or head voice is simply bad singing.  This signals the fact that the student has a teacher that doesn’t know how to accomplish a strong mix between bottom and top range.  Very often they make excuses to either not use bottom at all and bring the top down, or yell up the bottom and flip in a tiny little head voice.

Doreene Shurts is excellent at putting these two areas together so they will sound like one.  If you do not have this even condition in your voice you will always have a break, which will interrupt your style.

Do you notice that Barbara Streisand, Natalie Cole, Anita Baker or Tamia don’t have a break?  This is what Doreene teaches.  Don’t be intimidated by those who think that these voices that are one and that you need to ‘scream’ or pull up.
