Vocal Cords!
The vocal cords, also known as vocal folds, are a pair of soft tissue cords that are joined at the front of the larynx and extend back. (see above)

When the cords close, the back end of the cords come together (adduct), and the flow of air is temporarily stopped. When the air pressure overcomes the pressure of the muscles holding the cords together, the cords are blown apart and sound is made.

The pictures are just two examples of damage that can happen to vocal cords.

The LEFT picture shows a Nodule on the vocal cord.

The RIGHT picture shows on the right cord a hemorrhagic nodule and on the left cord a reactive nodule.

Yelling, screaming, smoking, inhaling irritants, coughing, throat clearing or excessive talking.  Also speaking at a low or high pitch or speaking/singing too loudly is referred to as vocal abuse or misuse.  If the vocal cords are abused frequently, then it might lead to vocal cord damage.

This kind of misuse of your voice can cause vocal fatigue, hoarseness, laryngitis and over time, nodules (or calluses) on your vocal cords.

Nodes can present as a 'gap' or a 'break' in your singing usually as you ascend the scale.

Taking care of your voice will not only let you sing to the best of your ability but will also give you the longevity to sing for as long as you wish!
